Should You Clean Switches & Outlets?

Yes! Cleaning switches and outlets are essential for preventing the accumulation of dust and dirt, which can lead to electrical hazards. Regular cleaning can also help prolong the life of your switches and outlets. However, cleaning them safely and correctly is crucial to avoiding electrical shocks or damage.

How To Clean Switches & Outlets

  • Before you start, taking some safety precautions is essential. Turn off the power to the specific outlets or switches you plan to clean by switching off the corresponding circuit breaker. Test the outlet or switch with a non-contact voltage tester to ensure there is no power.
  • Remove the cover before cleaning it. Use a screwdriver to carefully unscrew the outlet cover or switch plate from the wall. Be sure to keep the screws in a safe place so you can easily reattach the cover later.
  • A dish soap, vinegar, and water mixture is an effective solution to clean yellowed electrical outlets. Combine equal parts of dish soap and white vinegar in a bowl with warm water. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the mixture and gently scrub the yellowed outlet covers. Rinse the cloth in clean water and wipe the outlet cover again to remove any residue. Allow the cover to dry completely before reattaching it to the wall.
  • To clean grimy electrical sockets and switches, rubbing alcohol works well. Moisten a soft cloth or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and gently clean the cover, avoiding direct contact with the electrical components.
  • Allow the cover to dry completely before reattaching it to the wall.
