When Replacing My Outdoor Unit, Should My Indoor Unit Also Be Replaced?

If you have been having some problems with your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, the professionally trained technician who comes to your home or business will inspect your equipment and diagnose the problem before making a recommendation.

At David Gray Heating & Air, our technicians have the knowledge and expertise to quickly and efficiently determine the problem with your HVAC system and can get you back up and running before you know it, ensuring the comfort of your employees or family.

The service call might be prompted by you hearing strange noises coming from your air conditioning system. Or, you may have been noticing that it seems to be more difficult to cool down your home lately, especially on hotter days, compared to when you first had it installed. It's also possible that your technician will discover a problem that you were unaware of, during a routine inspection or cleaning visit.

In some cases, the technician will determine that you need to replace the outdoor condenser unit, and you will want to know whether you should also replace the indoor coil unit at the same time.

How Long Has it Been Since Last Service or Replacement?

One of the most important considerations for you is how long it has been since the last service call to inspect and clean your HVAC system.

Ideally, an expert should come to your premises at least twice a year; once for the heating equipment before the weather turns cold, and once for the air conditioning equipment, to correct any problems and make sure everything is running perfectly before the weather starts heating up.

In some cases, owners prefer to have a single visit per year to treat the cooling and heating equipment on the same day.

If you are the person who arranged for the installation of your HVAC system, you probably have easy access to the records of each service call. If you purchased the home or business and it came with existing HVAC equipment, you may not have access to all the pertinent information about how well the system has been serviced.

If it has been many years since you've installed the system or had it looked at, it's usually a good idea to replace the indoor unit when you are replacing the outdoor unit.

Equal Protection from Warranties

Another benefit to replacing the indoor unit at the same time as the outdoor unit that must be swapped out is because you will enjoy equal protection from the warranties.

If both units are the same age, it's possible that when one is starting to fail, the other one is due to fail sometime soon as well. You will have greater peace of mind if your indoor and outdoor units are the same age and have equal protection under warranty.

Efficiency and Saving Money

Your technician will be happy to explain in detail the fact that when you install a new outdoor unit, it must be matched correctly to the indoor unit. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER rating for your AC equipment measures how efficiently it works, and the more efficient your units, the lower your operating costs.

You need to match the outdoor and indoor units to have the same rating. Modern units must have a SEER rating of at least 13. If your indoor unit has a lower rating, such as 8, it will not work well with a more efficient outdoor unit, and you will need to replace it as well.

Prudent business and homeowners will do everything they can to make sure that their air conditioning system is functioning optimally. Not only will everyone be assured of staying nice and cool while the weather is hot, you will enjoy reduced electric utility bills when you replace your air conditioning system indoor and outdoor units with the latest, most energy-efficient equipment.
