How to Avoid Costly Winter Plumbing Repairs

frozen

January has brought freezing temperatures to Northeast Florida. While our winter may not be as intense compared to other parts of the country, cold weather still has the potential to wreak havoc on your plumbing. With more below-freezing temperatures expected, read our tips to ensure your system continues to work well this winter.

Insulate your pipes

When the weather drops low enough, water can freeze in your pipes and cause them to burst. A small crack can lead to the release of hundreds of gallons of water, destroying your property and belongings. To avoid this, contact a plumbing professional to help you insulate all exposed pipes.

Pack up the garden hose

Don't leave an outside hose connected to your home's plumbing during winter, as ice formed inside it can potentially freeze connecting pipes. Drain and put away your garden hose and insulate the outdoor spout. If possible, drain and shut off the valves leading outside as well.

Flush your water heater

Northeast Florida residents often deal with hard water, which contains dissolved minerals like calcium. The mineral buildup from hard water causes rust to form in your water heater, which then permeates the water you use to drink, cook and bathe. Rust formation also makes your pipes more susceptible to cracking or breaking during a freeze. Homeowners should perform a yearly system flush to keep your water heater in good shape. You can do this yourself, but if you aren't comfortable shutting off the water and doing the maintenance, schedule a professional plumber to come out annually.

Leave a drip of water running

Weather can be hard to plan for, especially in Florida. If you haven't had the time to insulate your pipes and are in for an especially cold night, leave a bit of warm water running in your faucets. The movement of water can be enough to stop your pipes from freezing.

The best advice for keeping your home safe in winter is to be prepared. With regular preventative maintenance and proper insulation, your home will be ready for issues this colder season can bring. If you're ready to schedule your winter service, call David Gray Plumbing at (904) 467-0784.
