Tips for Switching to LED bulbs

flickering

LED bulbs have been all the rage for years, but you may not be aware of all the benefits and options for these efficient light bulbs. Here are a few reasons to make the switch and tips for choosing the right options for lighting your home.

Benefits of LED Bulbs

Low-Cost

One of the biggest benefits of switching to LEDs is saving money. At one point, LED bulbs used to cost more than standard bulbs, deterring people from making the switch. However, they are now priced in a similar way, with entry-level LEDs bulb starting at less than $2.50 a bulb.

Even with the slightly higher cost, you'll start seeing cost savings right away. On average, having 10 LEDs in your home compared to 10 incandescent bulbs will save you 6 cents an hour.

Higher Efficiency

If you care about the environment, then switching to LEDs is a must. They can use up to 90 percent less energy, drastically reducing your electricity usage in your home. Plus, since many LED bulbs come with advanced features, such as light timers or dimmers, you can be more efficient when you don't need full power or when you forgot to turn off the light.

LED Lighting Options

Color Temperature

LEDs don't just come in one standard color. They have different tones for different rooms.

Go with warm tones for your bedroom, avoiding blue light, to keep your circadian rhythm on track. If you're celebrating Halloween, you can even choose spookier colors to set a haunted mood.

You'll be able to recognize the color temperature by looking at the kelvin rating. Lower kelvin ratings are warmer, while higher ratings are cooler. Choose something in the 2,200-3,000K range for your living room, something in the 2,700-5,000K range for the kitchen, and something in the 3,000-5,000K range for your bathroom.

Lumens

Lumens are the amount of brightness a bulb produces and are basically the LED equivalent of watts. Go with brighter bulbs for your bathroom and kitchen, but dimmer for your living room. For example, a 1,500-3,000 lumen bulb is good for living areas, but a 4,000-8,000 lumen bulb is good for the kitchen and bathroom.
